Za’atar refers to either a family of herbs or an individual culinary herb. It is also the name of a spice blend that combines the herb with roasted sesame seeds, dried sumac, and frequently salt, in addition to other spices. This blend is known as za’atar.
In the Arabic language, zaatar is a word that can refer to either a herb spice blend used in Middle Eastern cooking or, more crucially, an unique herb plant that is a member of the mint family. In English, the medicinal plant may be referred to as bible hyssop or Syrian oregano; however, the concoction itself is simply referred to as zaatar.
